Elmo, Missouri, home where the shooting occurred |
A 5-year-old Missouri boy shot and killed his 9-month-old baby brother Monday morning after grabbing a gun from a shelf built into the headboard of a bed in his grandfather's home.
According to a press release from the Nodaway County Sheriff's office, the baby was reportedly shot in the head in what appears to be an accidental shooting.
"[The gun] was just lying out," Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White told The Washington Post. "Little kids are curious. It was in the headboard of the bed, and he found it."
Their mother, Alexis Widerholt, was inside the home at the time of the shooting and frantically called 911, initially telling a dispatcher that the infant had been shot in the head with a paintball gun, per The Post.
When law enforcement and medical personnel arrived, they reportedly determined that the child had been shot with a .22-caliber magnum revolver.
The child was flown to Children's Mercy Hospital but did not survive his injuries, The Post reported.
The case is currently under investigation.
