A man was shot dead in a shootout with police near Taichung Airport in Taiwan on Monday.

The 45-year-old-man was shot in the chest, back, hip and stomach and died in hospital at 3.23pm, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported.

Twenty-six shots were fired in the incident.

A police constable and a 23-year-old woman were also wounded, but their injuries are said to be not life-threatening.

The man was riding a motorbike with his daughter to the airport, but was stopped by the police as his child was not wearing a helmet, the report said.

During questioning, a police officer’s gun fell on the ground and the man seized it and opened fire.

The magazine of the seized gun was emptied, suggesting the man fired 12 shots and the police 14, the report said.

Police said they will hold a briefing about the situation later in the day, but denied media speculation that the incident was related to Chen Fu-hsiang, the fugitive suspected of shooting two men at a parking lot in Ximending, Taipei earlier this month.
